An old refrigerator is ready for pickup when it is empty, disconnected, dry enough to move without leaking, and reachable through a clear path. The work before pickup is mostly about preventing water, loose shelves and tight corners from becoming surprises.

Start with the pickup conditions

Ask whether the hauler removes appliances from inside the home or expects curbside placement. LibertyHaul’s service scope includes inside removal, but the crew still needs to know about stairs, narrow landings, islands and finished floors. Measure the appliance at its widest fixed point and compare it with the narrowest doorway on the route.

Refrigerator pickup checklist

  • Remove all food, ice trays and loose bins.
  • Ask the appliance manufacturer or a qualified technician how and when to disconnect the unit.
  • Defrost freezer compartments early enough for meltwater to be controlled.
  • Wipe up standing water and secure removable shelves separately.
  • Tape or strap doors only after the interior is dry.
  • Photograph the route, including stairs and the tightest turn.
  • Keep children and pets away from the work path.

Defrosting changes the timing

Freezers and combination units can release more water than expected. Use towels and a shallow pan while defrosting, and check the owner’s manual before unplugging or moving the appliance. Do not chip ice with sharp tools or use improvised heat near plastic liners. If the pickup is soon and the unit is still iced over, tell the hauler instead of hiding the condition.

Leave the heavy move to the pickup crew

Refrigerators are top-heavy and awkward. A clear route is useful; dragging the unit to the curb is not required for an inside-removal appointment. The City of Kearney also offers a paid special-item pickup for residents, with items placed at the curb by the stated collection time. Compare that curbside option with an inside-removal service based on the lifting, access and timing you need.

For an estimate, send the appliance type, photos, pickup address and access notes. See refrigerator and freezer removal details or review what affects an estimate.
